“水墨之上”—2018·第四届昆明美术双年展

The 4th Kunming Art Biennale 2018

始创于2012年的昆明美术双年展，是经云南省文化和旅游厅批准、云南省财政厅拨款支持的一项具有国际视野的大型艺术展览活动。已于2012年、2014年、2016年相继举办了三届。短短数年间，参展的国家和地区已从本省扩展到全国，并辐射至南亚、东南亚、东亚、西亚等18个国家和地区。参展艺术家累计300余人，观众累计超过100,000人次。昆明美术双年展采用中国策展团队与国际策展人相结合的策展方式，坚持具有地域特色的国际性策划理念，旨在打造当代国际艺术与中国文化交流的平台。

本次展览共邀请了国内及南亚、东南亚、东亚、西亚等18个国家和地区的51位现当代艺术家，运用水墨、宣纸、毛笔等中国传统媒材，将不同的艺术理念介入其中，诠释了水墨艺术的多元可能。

Initiated in 2012, Kunming Art Biennale is an international art exhibition, ratified by the Yunnan Provincial  Department of Culture and Tourism and funded by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Finance. Biennales have been successively held in 2012, 2014, and 2016. As a platform of art, the Biennale supports cultural communication among South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, West Asia and China, with audience of over 100,000 domestic and international individuals. The Biennale exhibits 300 artists from 18 countries and regions. In order to construct a regional and cross-cultural platform, Kunming Art Biennale’s curatorial team involves both Chinese curatorial committees and international curators.

Kunming Art Biennale, 2018 will attract 51 contemporary artists from 18 countries and regions in South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia and West Asia. Chinese ink and Xuan paper, typically representing traditional Chinese culture, are taken as the main tools to create artworks for this biennale, with the purpose of integrating artists’ concept and Chinese traditional art forms, creating artworks  implicated diversified possiblities of ink.

主题阐释

第四届昆明美术双年展将以展示中国文化对南亚、东南亚的深刻影响，来凸显“一带一路”的国家战略及人类命运共同体的中国文化价值。众所周知，与中国南部比邻的东盟国家，自古就是汉语文化圈的重要组成，这些国家的人口不仅有相当比例的华裔，而且至今仍有不可小觑的人口侨居于此。应当说，南亚、东南亚许多国家至今仍保留着中国远古时的风俗文化遗风，甚至一些生活方式、思维习惯都与中国保持着千丝万缕的联系。近代以来，南亚、东南亚一些国家也曾受到以欧美为中心的全球化影响，无论在种族、民俗、文化或宗教上，使这一热带、亚热带地域形成了日益多元的文化兼容现象。

此次双年展，以中国书法、水墨艺术为文化载体，通过中国传统水墨文化艺术的典型品种在南亚、东南亚各国的传播、接受和本土再造，呈现南亚、东南亚各国的中国传统水墨艺术创作，同时也可以看到中国传统水墨艺术在南亚、东南亚地区的承传、再造与发展。毋庸讳言，20世纪以来，南亚、东南亚各国的社会经济发展基本是以欧美现代化进程为样本而进行的，这逐渐开始的现代社会发展也带有欧美文化全球化的身影。

第四届昆明美术双年展览，以汉语文化艺术的典型表征——书法与水墨作为展览的主要元素或媒介，就是为了清晰突显中国传统文化和南亚、东南亚文化中的渊源，加强沟通联系。通过让这些国家的当代重要艺术家以水墨、书法为元素或媒介而展开的当代艺术创作，共同在以水墨艺术为代表的中国传统文化艺术发展中不断创新，彰显水墨艺术的历史文脉与当代价值，谱写人类命运共同体新的艺术篇章。

水墨为上，是中国文人画以水墨作为老子、庄子艺术思想最集中的体现，不同于色彩、工笔、客观描绘而形成的写意传统，水墨也就形成了中国绘画最典型的艺术形态。本届双年展以此为主题，强调“水墨之上”的南亚、东南亚各国各民族对于这种艺术载体与艺术元素的历史承传、本土再造与当代创新。

水墨之上，成为南亚、东南亚当代文化圈鲜明艺术标识。

水墨之上，凸显了超越水墨之上的共同精神家园建设。

Theme

Interpretation of the theme: The theme of the 4th Kunming Art Biennale 2018 is “Beyond the Ink Wash”. This Biennale will show the profound influence of Chinese traditional culture on South Asia ,Southeast Asia and highlight the Belt and Road Initiative and the contribution of Chinese culture to the community of shared future for mankind. Adjacent to southern China, South Asia, and Southeast Asia have been historically influenced by traditional Chinese culture. Many Chinese migrants have been living in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Nowadays, South Asia and Southeast Asia still maintain the heritage of Chinese culture including their lifestyles and philosophy. Recently, South and Southeast Asia have been influenced by globalization profoundly, thereby promoting the formation of a more diverse and inclusive social economical phenomenon regarding ethnic custom, culture, and religions.

The Biennale will take Chinese calligraphy and ink art as the cultural carrier, presenting traditional Chinese ink art by artists from Southeast Asia where the Chinese traditional ink-painting art is inherited, reconstructed and developed. Needless to say, since the 20th century, Southeast Asia has been following Europe and America’s of economic development. Modernization in Southeast Asia also reflects the globalization of Europe and America.

Calligraphy and ink, typically representing Chinese language and culture are taken as the main elements and media of the 4th Kunming Art Biennale. They clearly indicate the origin of Chinese traditional culture and South Asia and Southeast Asia culture and strengthen their connection. By integrating traditional Chinese art, ink, and calligraphy into their creation, prominent artists will illustrate the historical and contemporary value of ink art and compose a new chapter for a community of shared future of mankind.

The goal of ink wash painting is not to simply reproduce the color or appearance of the subject, but to capture its spirit. Since ink wash painting is often considered to be the manifestation of the artistic ideas of Laozi and Zhuangzi (representatives of Taoism), it naturally becomes the most typical art form in Chinese painting. The 4th Biennale, titled Beyond the Ink Wash, emphasizes the historical heritage, local reconstruction and contemporary innovation of the artistic carrier and elements in Southeast Asia.

Beyond the Ink Wash will become an important piece of art in the contemporary cultural circle of South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Beyond the Ink Wash will contribute to the construction of a common spiritual home beyond the ink wash painting.
